Did you know that you might be the owner of unclaimed money or property currently being held by the State of Missouri?
The State of Missouri (through its Unclaimed Property Division) currently holds more than $550 million in unclaimed assets in more than three million owner accounts. Each year financial institutions, businesses, government agencies and other organizations turn over millions of dollars and the contents of nearly 500 safe deposit boxes to the Unclaimed Property Division. Statistically, one in 10 Missourians has assets being held by the state's Unclaimed Property Division.
The Unclaimed Property Division maintains unclaimed funds in trust for the rightful owners or their legal heirs forever. Unclaimed property never becomes the property of the State of Missouri. The Unclaimed Property Division holds the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes for at least one year upon receipt. Silver bars, false teeth, diamond rings, cremated remains, letters signed by President Abraham Lincoln and many other items have been discovered when opening abandoned safe deposit boxes.
How do I find out if I am the owner of any unclaimed money or property currently held by the State of Missouri?
1. Visit http://www.treasurer.mo.gov/AboutUCP.asp (State of Missouri, Department of Treasury website)
2. In the upper right hand corner, you will see a box marked UNCLAIMED PROPERTY in orange with a space to enter your name. Enter your last name, then your first name in the box and press GO. If your name results in matches, scroll through the matches, using your middle initial and the town to identify if you are the recipient of either unclaimed money or property. If you find a match, check mark it on the left side of the page and click VIEW DETAILS at the bottom of the page. Note: For convenience, you can check up to five names at once.
3. Follow the instructions and click SUBMIT. The next screen is a printable form with directions. Depending on the value of your unclaimed property or money, the form may have to be notarized.
Congratulations! You should receive a check or further instructions from the State of Missouri within 90 days…
