Traffic Law
What are points?
When you get a traffic ticket, a designated number of points can be assessed on your driving record. As an example, a speeding ticket can result in either two points or three points being assessed, depending on whether it was for a violation of a state law or a municipal ordinance. A DWI conviction carries an assessment of eight points for a first offense. Careless driving results in two or four points being assessed depending on whether the ticket was issued by the state or by a city or county officer.
Why are points important?
In Missouri, if you accumulate eight points in an 18 month period of time, your license is suspended for 30 days. If you receive 12 points in a 12 month period, your license is revoked for one year. Obviously, the loss of your license can have a devastating effect on your ability to work, take your children to school, run errands and enjoy your life.
A hidden and costly effect of points on your driving record can often be a substantial increase in insurance premiums. Your insurance company can and usually will increase your premiums if you have a traffic conviction off your record. This is especially the case with younger drivers.
Do points stay on your record forever?
Points and convictions remain on your driving record and are only removed or reduced after you have driven for a period of time without a further conviction. It takes about three years of driving without a conviction for your driving record to be cleared.
I live out of state. Does Missouri report convictions in other states?
Yes. Missouri notifies the home state of non-residents of convictions, so the state in which you live will usually treat the Missouri conviction as if it happened in your home state.
